Dental Bridges
What Is a Dental Bridge? Traditional vs. Implant-Supported Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is designed to replace a missing tooth or several consecutive missing teeth. The restoration is made up of pontics (false teeth) attached to dental crowns.
Traditional Bridge
A traditional bridge is a fast, affordable solution.
Two healthy teeth on either side of the gap will hold the bridge in place after they are reshaped to accept crowns. Using our CEREC® technology, we can design and place your dental bridge in one appointment.
We use high-quality dental materials that look like natural teeth for a beautiful, long-lasting result.
Implant-Supported Bridge
An implant-supported bridge is supported by dental implants (titanium posts that replace tooth roots) inserted into the jawbone, where they function as replacement tooth roots.
You typically need one implant to support each end of the bridge. If the gap requires several pontics, additional implants can be added. Implant-supported bridges are far superior to cantilever bridges, an outdated solution that uses just one adjacent tooth for support.

Same-Day Traditional Bridges
Traditional dental bridges typically require one or two appointments, depending on the type of materials used to create your bridge.
In either case, our dentist will first alter the teeth that will hold the dental crowns. We will then take an impression to design the bridge, which will be fabricated on-site using our CEREC technology or sent to a trusted off-site lab.
With a same-day bridge, we can place it immediately after it has been crafted, which takes about an hour. Otherwise, we will provide you with a temporary bridge until you return for the permanent bridge.
How Is an Implant-Supported Bridge Placed?
Implant-supported bridges require a series of appointments and a months-long healing period to allow the implants to fuse with the bone. The entire process takes longer than traditional bridges. However, dental implants stop the bone atrophy that would otherwise occur without tooth roots.
We use modern technology and high-quality materials for a long-lasting, natural-looking result. A well-positioned implant can last for decades or even a lifetime. The bridge restoration will eventually need to be replaced. However, bridge replacement with implants doesn't require altering healthy teeth.
If you have elected to receive an implant-supported restoration, Drs. Shahram Navid and Justin Cifuni, can perform all the steps, from implant surgery to designing the bridge, at our practice in Peabody.
